The Women's Caucus for Art was founded in 1972 in connection with the College Art Association (CAA). It is a national organization unique in its multi-disciplinary, multicultural membership of artists, art historians, students and educators, museum professionals and galleries in the visual arts.

The role of WCA is to serve as an intersection for both market and historical forces with its emphasis being on women working in the visual arts professions today. WCA is a national network that is involved in research, exhibitions, conferences, and honor awards for achievement. The WCA archives are housed at Rutgers University.

On the local level, STL-WCA organizes 3-4 exhibitions a year; organizes the biennial Contemporary Women Artists Exhibition; participates in local events that enact awareness and change in the community; holds meetings so women can network; presents lectures by women artists; holds 'girls nights out': evenings of art and conversation; produces a newsletter and sponsors a web-page where women artists can list their upcoming exhibitions, papers, etc and link their web-site.
On the national level, you are empowered by a national network of over 1600 women who represent a diverse yet strong presence. The national offers scholarship opportunities for students. They offer grants for women artists. They offer a system of networking that not only extends coast to coast but across the world. They offer exhibition opportunities on the national level and across chapters. Through the Matrix project, they offer insight into galleries and representation nationally. They offer subcommittees that focus on specific group concerns (Black women artists, Lesbian artists, Jewish Women's League). They keep an active member database. They present annual conferences that focus on art and women in the arts. They work to support legislation that supports the rights of women, as well as the rights of all people.
